Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) es un ilusionado futuro padre cuya mujer sale de cuentas dentro de tan solo cinco días. Cuando Peter se apresura a coger un vuelo a casa desde Atlanta para poder estar a su lado cuando dé a luz, sus mejores intenciones se tuercen por culpa de un encuentro fortuito con el joven aspirante a actor Ethan Tremlay (Zach Galifianakis), que obliga a Peter a hacer autostop con Ethan en lo que resulta ser un viaje de costa a costa que dejará destrozados varios coches, numerosas amistades y el último resquicio de tranquilidad de Peter.
