Tras sufrir una depresión, Craig (Keir Gilchrist), un adolescente de 16 años, es ingresado en un centro psiquiátrico. Allí se entera de que la sala para jóvenes está cerrada, encontrándose sin opciones en una sala de adultos. Uno de los pacientes, Bobby (Zach Galifianakis), pronto se convierte en mentor y protector de Craig. El joven, contando con el apoyo de Bobby, conocerá a un buen número de personas con diversos problemas, descubrirá sus talentos ocultos y hará buenas migas con una muchacha de su misma edad, Noelle (Emma Roberts).
