Narra la historia de tres personas que están obsesionadas por la mortalidad de formas diferentes. George (Matt Damon) es un trabajador manual norteamericano que tiene una conexión especial con la vida después de la muerte. En el otro lado del mundo, Marie (Cécile de France), una periodista francesa, tiene una experiencia cercana a la muerte que sacude su concepto sobre la realidad. Y cuando Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), un escolar londinense, pierde a la persona que estaba más cercana a él, necesita desesperadamente respuestas. Cada uno de ellos en una senda en búsqueda de la verdad, sus vidas se cruzan, cambiadas para siempre por lo que creen que podría o debería existir en la otra vida.
